About This Quote

This quote is a commentary on the hypocrisy of the American military. It was spoken by former U.S. Senator Max Cleland, who lost both his legs in Vietnam after he stepped on a land mine. The Purple Heart is awarded to any member of the United States Armed Forces who is wounded or killed in action.

It is awarded to honor those who have been wounded or killed in action seen as “heroes” by the American people, although they are often no more than criminals who believed they were doing what needed to be done at the time. The fact that they are not actually heroes will only be discovered later on when they are sent to prison for committing crimes against humanity.
